Quiet Time in 1 Kings 19

Writer's picture: FilipFilip

PERSONAL JOURNAL:

SIN ( Conviction ): In today’s quiet time, Father, I’m convicted because it has been several days since my last quiet time.  I do not know why I’m struggling so much in my obedience to You, Father.  Why am I regressing?  I see it happening, but it’s like I’m watching it happen from the outside and cannot do anything about it.  Please forgive me for this disobedience, Father.  Help me to be a better man.  Help me to be a better follower.

PROMISE ( 1 Kings 19:2, 7-8 ): Although Jezebel had plans for Elijah’s death, Your plans always supersede our own.  Your plan was for Elijah to live; so much so that Your own angel eluded to this as a promise to him when he came to Elijah twice to serve him food.  He spoke of a lengthy journey that Elijah would be going on, so he had to eat up.  You promised him life when those around him promised him death.  I see whose promise was fulfilled in this case as is always—Yours, Father.

ATTITUDE ( 1 Kings 19:19 ): Elijah was always quick to take action on Your will for Him without hesitation.  He did the same here, even though the threat on his life likely remained.  That didn’t matter to him, though, because those threats were of the world and You are God over this world.  If you want him to do something, then the world’s opinions, harshness, and threats do not matter.  This is a very devout obedience that Elijah had.  To be completely honest and transparent, I do not know if I’ll ever get to this level of obedience, Father.  What I do know is that I will try to keep moving towards it knowing that I may never attain it.

COMMAND ( 1 Kings 19:15-18 ): Your command to Elijah in these verses all boiled down to a single word—obedience.  Your command was for Elijah to be obedient to Your will for him, which he was.  I know this is a struggle of mine, Father.  Please continue to shower me with grace and patience, Father.

EXAMPLE ( 1 Kings 19:3-8 ): Elijah gives such a great example here; one that is actually quite practically.  He’s struggling so much in life right now with the threats coming his way.  He’s literally running for his life…sort of.  What I realize is that he’s actually running to be alone in the wilderness with You so he could cry out in self-sacrifice for You to take his life.  Little does he know that You actually have plans for him, so You actually feed him for a couple of days through Your angel.  You then have the angel send him on a lengthy journey to go and speak to You in a more intimate type of situation that’d actually mean something to him.  Likely it was to give everyone who wanted to see him dead some time to cool off a bit.  Your plans always have so many steps involved in them that it’s impossible for us to truly determine it all.

*DAILY NOTE: Thank You for always being there for me, Father.  Thank You for always allowing me to come back to the foot of the Cross.  Thank You for always trying to pull me back into Your presence even when I am heavily resisting, Father.  Just thank You.
